Things to See & Do in Cyprus

Limassol

Limassol is located on the southern coast of Cyprus. It is the second largest city, has a population of around 135,000, and is the largest seaside resort of the island. Stretching ten miles along the coast and serving as a splendid backdrop to Limassol are the Troodos Mountains.

Limassol’s rich and long history includes the city’s thriving winemaking industry. Even during the reign of Richard the Lionheart, when Cyprus was captured by the Crusaders, the city was well known among traders for its sugarcane and wine. Today, Limassol is the hub of the winemaking industry in Cyprus and, in fact, most of the grapes are grown in the fertile foothills of the Troodos Mountains. It is also well known as a centre of commerce and tourism.

Paphos

A charming little harbour town, on the west of the island, Paphos is the capital of the Cyprus' western region. The people here are warm, hospitable and really hearty souls! Every family continues to live by its ancient traditions and local culture. The food is plentiful and afternoons are a great time for a short siesta and a chat with the family. Just outside the city are the ancient Tombs of the Kings, a must visit in the area.

Truly captivating, and yet, truly simple, this Cypriot town has all the markings of a memorable holiday. Paphos is a lively, cosmopolitan Cypriot town surrounded by mountains, the sea and its beaches. The unique mix of modern day technology with ancient history makes this town simply perfect for a beautiful and relaxing break. Laced with a gorgeous coastline, Paphos is completed by its charming villages up in its mountains, where the customs and traditions of the country still live on.

Trodos Massif

A spectacular mountain range in the south of Cyprus, the Trodos Mountains are an excellent way to escape the heat and hordes of tourists that can choke the beach towns during the summer months. 15th century monasteries, countless walking trails and gorgeous little wine-making villages dot the landscape. The best known (and hence most touristy) monastery is the Kykkos Monastery. It is situated in the western Trodos, and has been completed renovated. It also houses a museum, which contains a large collection of religious artefacts and icons. In the north is the Solea district, which is ideal for cycling, and is littered with picturesque villages and monasteries.

Nicosia (Lefkosia)

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Nicosia has been the only divided capital in the world. Although not a common tourist destination (lack of beaches don't help in this regard!), a trip to the city is an essential part of understanding Cyprus' history and current situation. Situated inside 16th century Venetian walls, the old town is the most interesting part of the city. Narrow alleyways lead to museums and churches, and, invariably, to the omnipresent wall. The Famagusta Gate, on the eastern wall, has been beautifully preserved and is currently used as a cultural centre.
